Land Description
Exceptional Opportunity TO Aquire A 224 +/- Acre Michigan Wooded Parcel. - This Property is located near the Assessor's Plat of Brooklyn, a small settlement south of the unincorporated community of Baltic, Michigan, which was a historic copper mining location - found in Houghton County in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. - The area, affectionately known as “Baltic-Onkalos Corner” an intersection, where Onkalos Corner Road meets other local roads, is steeped in Finnish-American heritage, dating back to the Copper Country mining boom of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. - Three early settler's families lived here, and then were joined by Jacob and Aliina Onkalos who settled with three children into an old, abandoned lumber camp there in 1905. A trout stream (Maybe a tributary of the Pilgrim River) was located at the edge of this camp. [Onkalo means “cave” or “hiding place” in Finnish.] - The property boasts a diversity of forest, primarily featuring red maple, ironwood, and red oak, along with sugar maple, eastern hemlock, American basswood, yellow birch, and American elm. - An extensive trail system winds through the land, offering several open areas and the presence of a Pilgrim River tributary at its southern end. The Pilgrim River is a 12.9-Mile cold-water trout fishing river that flows into the Keweenaw Waterway and ultimately Lake Superior. - The Current Owners have enrolled the majority of this property (215 Acres of the 224 Acres) in the Michigan CFA Program focusing on timber management through select harvesting and wildlife habitat development. The remaining 8.77 acres are on the regular ad valoren tax roll, providing an ideal site for a future home or cabin. - This parcel is conveniently located approximately ten minutes from Houghton, home of Michigan Technological University. The area offers abundant outdoor recreation, including world-class hiking, biking, skiing, and snowmobiling opportunities along Lake Superior's Keweenaw Waterway. - We invite you to visit this unique property today. - Note: The parcel is enrolled in the Michigan CFA Program. Benefit To the Owner: This Voluntary Program provides a tax incentive to landowners to retain and manage their forestland for long-term timber production and to provide foot access to the public for hunting, trapping and fishing. CF Landowners do not pay ad valorem general property taxes. Instead, CF landowners pay a specific tax. The CF specific rate for 2022-2026 is $1.35 per acre annually. No buildings or improvements (including trailers, motor homes, permanent hunting blinds, utilities) are allowed. If an owner wants to build a structure in this property, an area for this purpose can be identified, and the landowners may withdraw that area by submitting an application, application fee, and pay a withdrawal penalty.
