It is the easternmost city of the San Bernardino Metropolitan area, and is geographically isolated from other cities in the area. Needles derived its name from the mountain peaks in Arizona, and is the gateway to the Mojave National Preserve.
Needles, like Death Valley to the northwest, is known for extreme heat during the summer and occasionally sets national or world daily temperature records. It has a desert climate with a subtropical temperature range. Temperatures are known to reach 120 degrees in late July and early August with an average annual temperature of 74.2 degrees. Winter temperatures range from 62 - 80 degrees and lows of 40 - 60 degrees. Summer temperatures range from 106 - 122 degrees and lows of 82 - 94 degrees. Annual rainfall is about 5.11 inches.
