Land Description

40-Acre Wooded Michigan Recreational Parcel For Sale - This property is located in Iron River Township, in the north-western corner of Iron County in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The nearest town is Kenton, 6+ miles to the north, an unincorporated community in the southwest part of Houghton County in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. In the late 1800S, when forests covered the area, the Duluth, South Shore, and Atlantic Railroad reached Kenton. After that time much of the surrounding white pine forests were cut and shipped out by rail to all parts of the Country. After the logging heyday, the area became settled by farmers, and today it is a fishing and hunting destination. Kenton is the hub of most of the activity. The Town Hall, Fire Hall, County Maintenance Garage, Kenton District Forest Service Office, Taverns with food service, and nearby resorts keep the town "hopping". Logging is still active, and tourist activities abound. Three sides of the property adjoin part of the 980,000+ acre Ottawa National Forest. This National Forest is filled with scenic waterfalls, lakes, and rivers. The Kenton Ranger District of this Federal Forest is the largest and oldest (established in 1931), and is known for camping, lake-stream fishing, canoeing, hunting, hiking, and snowmobile activities, as well as Cross-country and downhill skiing. There's something for every outdoors person to enjoy in this area. The Lower Dam Lake Campground, the Sparrow-Kenton Wayside Picnic Area (with facilities) at Kenton, and Sparrow Rapids National Forest Campground are especially popular with visitors. Three-On Lake, as well as Plantation, Barchard, Beck, Beitner, Bender, Bog, and Bowstead Lake, as well as fishing rivers and creeks (Buritts Creek, Onion Creek, Beaver Creek, Adrian Creek, Jumbo River, Dorrie Creek, Walton Creek, Debutant Creek, Erickson Creek) provide lots of fishing action in the area. The East Branch of the Jumbo River passes to the east of the property. It joins with the Shane Creek, and flows into the East Branch of the Ontonagon River, just north of M-28. In the Jumbo and Shane you'll find Browns, Brookies, and spring Steelhead. This nearby branch of the Ontonagon River river is a Class 3 "All Year Open Season" River, which is classified as a Blue Ribbon Trout Stream. There are waterfalls to explore nearby. The Dumpy Falls, on the Jumbo River (Waterfall Photo No. 1 -- 46.416944 N 88.913611 W) is just to the east of the property offered for sale. The Jumbo Falls, (Waterfall Photo No.2 -- 46.450556 N 88.913056 W) is about 2.5 miles north of the property offered for sale. It is a very nice 6-Foot cascading waterfall, that can be reached after a short hike down a path through the mature forest in this area. North-west of the parcel (North of Kenton) are the very remote Onion Falls (Waterfall Photo No. 3 -- 46.56974, -88.98429) and the Lower Onion Falls, on the Onion Creek. One of the most popular hiking, snowmobiling and touring destination in the area is The Sturgeon River Gorge Wilderness, a 14,139 acre wilderness. Here you will find the Sturgeon National Wild and Scenic River and its tributaries with steep rugged gorges up to 300 feet deep, and 1/2 to 1 mile wide.

The main E-W U.P. Snowmobile Trail No. 8, and the N-S trail No. 107 converge in the Village of Kenton, only about 6 miles away. Hunting and Trapping is popular here. Wildlife common in the area include Whitetail deer, Black bear, Moose, Gray wolf, Fisher, Pine marten, River otter, Bobcat, Mink, and Beaver. Birders will find Ruffed grouse, Woodcock, Canadian geese, Ducks, Osprey, Loons, and Wild turkey. Local Bald eagle sightings are the highest in the Midwest. The property has a varied terrain, is well wooded, and there is access via a Federal Forest Service Road. If you seek a private, Get-A-Way be sure to see this property.
