Land Description

Upper Michigan Waterfront Parcel for Sale! This 1.78 +/- Acre Parcel is located on beautiful Portage Lake in Torch Lake Township of Houghton County, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Portage Lake is part of a 25 mile long Keweenaw Waterway that cuts across the Keweenaw Peninsula. This waterway is one of the most important historic regions related to Copper Mining in Michigan! The Keweenaw Peninsula (pronounced key-win-naw, gets its name from the Ojibiwas (Chippewas) meaning "Portage") arcs northeastward about 60 miles into the south side of Lake Superior. The ancient Portage River and Portage Lake provided a natural water pathway across most of the Keweenaw Peninsula and was used by natives for transportation and fishing. The partly natural, and partly artificial, man made ship canal was created in the 1860s. It consists of five miles along the Portage River, seventeen-and-a-half miles in Portage Lake, and two-and-a-half miles through the man-made canal. The effort was a joint venture between the United States Government and several mining corporations. Ships could now enter the canal from either side of the Keweenaw Peninsula and cross to the other side without having to go around the peninsula. It also allowed freighters to haul copper from the rich copper mines of the Keweenaw Peninsula out through Lake Superior to larger cities, and enabled supply boats and freighters to reach the cities of Houghton and Hancock, which supplied goods to most of Michigan's copper region. Today it is used mostly by pleasure boats, wave runners, and jet boats, and provides a Harbor of Refuge to protect vessels from Superior's storms. It is also part of the Keweenaw Water Trail, a designated loop route around and through the Keweenaw Peninsula for canoes and sea kayaks, that takes about six to eight days of paddling. It was established in 1995 and has been designated A Superior Sports Port by National Geographic Adventure Magazine. The circumnavigation is on its way to becoming Michigan’s top paddling destination. The parcel being offered for sale has over 180-Feet of sand and rocky shoreline from which you can launch your own water craft, swim and fish! Sightings of Bald eagle, Beaver, Canadian geese, Duck, Owl, and Sandhill crane are common. Those who fish will find Brown trout, Cohos, Chinooks, Lake trout, Northern pike, Salmon, Steelhead, and Walleyes available right off the property. The property faces western sunsets and has views of brilliant fall colors across the waters! It has mature woods, and also includes part of a 3-4 Acre Pond that may support fish stocking. The property is just minutes south-east of Hancock and Michigan Tech University, Finlandia University, shopping, sightseeing, events, festivals, historical buildings, museums, and outstanding outdoor recreation. Downhill skiing and snowboarding is available at Mount Ripley just a few minutes drive west of the property, and Michigan Tech Trails and the Swedetown Trails in Calumet are also not very far away. There is something for every sports man, woman or child! Power and phone is available on parcel. Survey is on file. Restrictive Covenants apply. Contact us for information today!
