Land Description

75-Acre Michigan Wooded Recreational Parcel For Sale. This property is located in Elm River Township, in central Houghton County, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This is an historic copper mining area, that developed after the construction of the Copper Range railroad. The 75-Acre property is located just north of the unincorporated community of Winona. Winona (which means "firstborn daughter" in the Dakota language) had its roots in the prehistoric copper mining of the local native peoples. Evidence of their pit workings attracted the attention of prospectors and investors as the area began to industrialize. The Winona Mining Company organized in 1864. It reorganized as the Winona Copper Company in 1898, and built a mine that consisted of four shafts. It was adjacent to the King Philip Mine, which they absorbed - The two mines produced approximately 17.6 million pounds of refined copper by the time the mines closed in the early 1920S. The town that sprung up around these mines grew to over 1,000 people by 1920, who enjoyed restaurants, a saloon, a dance hall, a brewery, churches, a barber shop, boarding houses, a school, a post office, and Duplex dwellings built in five neighborhoods. Now only a school, church, and a few homes remain, but Copper, silver, and datolite can be still found in the mine piles. You drive to this community, and take woods trails northwards to the property offered for sale. This wooded property is very secluded, and forested with: American basswood, Balsam fir, Eastern hemlock, Eastern hophornbeam, Northern white cedar, Paper birch, Quaking aspen, Red maple, Sugar maple, White spruce, and Yellow birch. The property is currently enrolled in the Commercial Forest program. Owners receive a property tax incentive for timber production. CFA land is privately owned land that is open to the public for walk-in access for hunting, trapping, and fishing in Season, and no permanent structures can be built on CFA properties. If you would like to build a Cabin on this property, an identified area that meets Township land size minimums for building may be removed from the program. The balance may be left in the program. We have people who can guide you through this process. Today, Elm River Township has become a center for all things recreational... There is Hunting and Fishing, and the Township is located in the heart of the Upper Peninsula's ATV and Snowmobile trails. The Township has numerous lakes, including the Twin Lakes, where a beautiful State Park is located. Local and Out-Of-State campers love to stay here. If you would like to have a peek of the weather and activities going on here, check out the online "Krupp Cam". If you would like information about this property contact us today.
