Deer, elk, antelope, coyotes, birds, eagles, and bighorn sheep also inhabit the area. Vegetation in the area include: sagebrush, chamisa, Piñon pine and juniper.
San Luis is 16 miles south of Fort Garland, 40 miles southeast of Alamosa, and approx.150 miles southwest of Colorado Springs, and approx. 60 miles north of Taos, New Mexico.
