Cedar Tree Plantation Antebellum : Ridgeway : Fairfield County : South Carolina

Land Description

Price Reduced. This 2,900 square foot home, known as Cedar Tree Plantation, was built in 1853 by Edward G. Palmer and is set in a very private and secluded area of Ridgeway, South Carolina. The home is a one and one half story building with a gabled porch on the front supported by columns. There are dormers in the roof on the front and rear. All of the lumber and eighteen inch heart pine siding of which the house is built was cut on the plantation grounds.

The property consists of the main house, an 800 square foot two bedroom cottage, a large barn which both need work and various outbuildings all set on 17+ acres of mature trees, fenced pasture, meadows and many ornamental bushes and shrubs along with Cherokee rose vines that are more than 100 years old.

Not far from the house is an old cemetery containing the weathered gravestones and tombs of those who once lived here. Beneath one of these rest Colonel Dunbar, a soldier of the Revolutionary War. Another notable resident of the home was Mrs. Allard J. Van Exem who was the first woman U.S. Representative from South Carolina. After moving into Cedar Tree Plantation she became a master tree farmer and lived in the home until her death in 1989 at the age of 103.

The plantation house, with its striking front porch flanked by large columns, contains a first floor master suite with a full bath and sitting room or office, formal living and dining rooms, library and eat in kitchen with butlers pantry. The first floor is completed by a spacious enclosed back porch that runs the full length of the building and provides the common access to the grounds and outbuildings. The second floor provides two additional bedrooms, a possible small third bedroom/nursery with closet, a full bath and attic storage.

The owner had begun extensive repairs, many of which were completed but a fair amount of finishing and redecorating work remains for the new owners to complete in accord with their personal taste. The cottage and barn need major repairs but could be restored for active use. This property is very well-priced for this location and the potential it offers.

Located just six minutes from I-77, this location is an easy drive to Blythewood, or Columbia, South Carolina or Charlotte, North Carolina.
