Population of the County is 4200 aprox. Historically an agricultural community, but this one has one of the largest and least used Wilderness Areas in the country, the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness, which takes in the Great Sand Dunes National Preserve. There are several 14ers fourteen-thousand-foot peaks Kit Carson, Crestone Peak, Crestone Needle, Humboldt, Challenger, Columbia Point, Blanca Peak, Little Bear, Ellingwood Point and Lindsay are some of the highest peaks in Colorado. Blanca is the 4th highest summit peak of the Rocky Mountains of North America at 14,351 ft.
