Some History The Ute Indians were attracted to the Wet Mountain Valley by the plentiful water and abundant game. In the mid 1500'S Spanish explorers entered the western edge of Custer County in search of gold, silver and the fountain of youth. Over three hundred years later Europeans finally found the precious metals they sought, however, we are still looking for the fountain of youth. Activities Near Located approximately 75 miles from Colorado Springs and only minutes from the quaint town of Westcliffe, you'll enjoy wildlife-viewing or big game hunting in this undiscovered mountain valley, boating or fishing at Lake DeWeese or first-class fly-fishing and rafting in the Arkansas River, just 30 minutes away. Skiing at Monarch Ski Area is only 90 minutes away. For hikers or backpackers, the Rainbow Trail which runs from Salida to Westcliffe for 100 miles along the eastern edge of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, can be accessed just west of town.
