Windy Ridge Ranch is located almost directly south of Elk City, OK on the North Fork of the Red River. As you're heading off pavement toward this property the very first time you may start to wonder when the exciting terrain and scenic views are going to start. Heading off pavement and toward the ranch there are plenty of ordinary wheat fields farmed from bar ditch to bar ditch but don't be alarmed, just wait for it. Almost out of nowhere as you head down the dead end county road through the gate the 200 foot yes that's 200 foot bluffs literally climb out of the North Fork of the Red River bottom. Upon entry into the property on the gravel road leading to the cabin is a small wheat field on the left and scattered mesquite on the right. The cabin has a living area and an attached storage area making it a perfect hunting cabin. Notice the picnic table in the pictures under the overhang on the porch. It is facing north toward the gyp filled bluffs. The bluffs are set back about a 1/4 of a mile from the river and the land in between them currently grows winter wheat. In the past alfalfa has been grown in the bottoms as well. In my years of exclusively selling hunting properties I have been able to develop an opinion of unique and special and I would classify this place at the top of that list. The reason I think this place is so good starts with its remote location. The only road frontage that touches the property is at the gate on the east side and along the county road of the 80 /- ac in the far NW. The next characteristic is terrain. Where can you go and find this kind of scenic elevation I looked at the topographical maps showing land up and down the N. Fork of the Red and these bluffs only run for about 10 miles making them relatively scarce, especially after recalling all the boring wheat fields you have to pass on your way into this place. Water is next on the list with approximately 3 miles of river frontage and a nice deep 6 /- ac pond among other small tanks. I had the privilege of sharing a dove hunt here with my 10 year old son, a friend and his 11 year old son on the opening day of dove season in 2011. With the drought the outlook for birds was pretty gloomy. However both boys harvested their first doves and the action was literally non-stop as birds were flogging the only pond in the area still holding water. List every game species western Oklahoma has to offer and this place has it. If you like to deer hunt just pick your weapon. Hunt the river bottom with your bow and take long range rifle shots from the bluff. While taking pictures I made note of how the deer trails pinched down in several locations coming off the top of the bluffs and heading down toward the green fields along the river. A bow hunter could even set up on top of the bluff, watch the bottom with glasses and have a chance of a big trophy coming over the top and making his way down the face of the bluff. Pigs can fill the time in between deer and turkey seasons because you'll want to make sure and make it out for spring turkeys. There are literally hundreds of birds that flock up on this place in the fall before they separate in the spring. So, no matter what your favorite species of game this place most likely has it. If you have been looking for 'the perfect place' in western Oklahoma then this place might just hit your hot button.
